Sandy Cove Newfoundlands
       Where excellence Abounds
My family of Newfs and I are always working on something.  Championship titles, working titles, obedience titles and of course living and loving life.
Here is were you can see what's happening currently and with whom.  Remember it's the Journey,  not the destination.
My guys are currently Owner Handled and what a feeling to have the judge point to us.  I watched these guys take their first breath and am beside them for all their accomplishments.  The Ultimate Newf/Human relationship.
Greater Gainseville Dog Fancier Show in Ocala Fl., Jan 30 and Jan 31, 2010.

"Morgan" SandyCove's U made me love U RN received WD both days, on Sunday he went WD< BW<BOS and put 3 more points towards his Championship.  WAY TO GO MORGAN!!!!!!!

"Hemmingway"  CH SandyCoves for The Love of The Sea went for his first leg of his CD title but the rain and the wind made for a ruff day.  We are training and will try again another day.
The newfs and I always look forward to Dog Show weekends. On 2/19/10 Morgan AKA SandyCove's U Made Me Love U RN and Hemingway AKA CH Sandycove's For The Love of The Sea RN jumped in the Newfy Van at 4:30 AM bound for Lakeland. Ring times were  the same for Morgan and Hemingway, both conformation and obedience were scheduled for 9 AM. The problem this presented was not theirs. I was the one that needed to be in two places at the same time. Upon arrival at the show site, I went to the obedience ring to see if Hemingway and I could be moved to the last team to exhibit. The judge agreed and Morgan and I took off to get ready for the conformation ring. Morgan was getting close to finishing his championship.  He had both Majors with a total of 12 points.  Showing Morgan has been particularly exciting! While I have bred numerous champions, their titles were achieved with Elizabeth Baugh, their accomplished and professional handler. Morgan is the first newf I have handled from the outset in the Bred By Exhibitor Class. What is so special about Morgan is that as a pup in my arms, day in and day out, he made me love him. He has a tremendous zeal for life, is an eternal optimist, and greets each day with an infectious exuberance. I never had thoughts of showing him in conformation because he had such an aptitude for work. So showing him in conformation occurred quite by accident. Morgan and I began working on rally and classic obedience. After completing an entry in rally, I thought why not also show him for the fun of it in the breed ring in the Bred By Exhibitor class.  So on 2/19/10, Morgan needed just 3 more points to complete his championship. Penny Schubert, arguably the most talented groomer of newfies, readied Morgan for the ring. I was pacing, nervous always before exhibiting. What a great day for Morgan, Judge Gaeta selected Morgan as Winner's Dog and Best of Opposite Sex to his girlfriend, Bettina! Those who know me across the country recognized the WOOO HOOO I bellowed as Judge Gaeta pointed to Morgan. That gave Morgan 13 points.

Still exhilarated over the judges award to Morgan, Hemingway and I rushed to the obedience ring.  Morgan was about to share the glory of the day. Hemingway qualified in obedience! He needed 2 more legs to complete his CD. Then on 2/20/10, the routine was repeated. Leaving the house at 4:30 AM, Hemingway, Morgan, and I headed for the show. Once again there were conflicting times. The obedience judge accommodated and this time Hemingway was exhibited first.  He passed the on lead heeling and off lead heeling and at the time of the sits and downs, he was qualifying for another leg. He made it through the long sit. Then came the long down, Hemingway sat up about 15 seconds before the end of the exercise. So close yet so far. I wondered at the time what went wrong.  Well as the day unfolded I would understand. Hemingway and I rushed to return Hemingway to the van and then to get Morgan. Morgan was getting some touching up by Penny and then Joan Schenekau continued to ready Morgan for what would be his last day in the Bred-By Exhibitor Class. YES, Morgan did it again! He was Judge Fetter's selection for Winner's Dog, Best of Winner's, and Best of Opposite Sex giving him the remaining 2 points necessary for his championship!! Once again a WOOO HOOO was sounded!!
Tears came to my eyes, the feeling of being present at the breeding, watching as he took his first breath, loving, caring for him, sharing the journey that brought us to this achievement has been like none other!! Morgan cheers me in his unique way. Affectionate beyond words, he is the humor that keeps things in perspective. Morgan, from the time I can remember, has always wanted to be a lap dog.  Knowing that he would one day be a giant, I knew being a lap dog would not work for us. However, everyday of his life he has tried to climb into my lap...as if to say...hey Mom I know today is the day....Well Morgan TODAY IS YOUR DAY...and you have your place not only in my heart...but you are my newfy lap dog!!!! As for Hemingway, he told me he wanted Morgan to have ALL the limelight on his special day!

              Tyler’s junior experience so far

On my first day I was burning up with both excitement and nervousness.
But, I was trying not to show it I got 3rd and 4th place in my first two shows.
“I said well it’s a start it’s not a good one, but it’s a start”. and now here I am
Three shows into my novice junior career and I say what do you know I got
1st place and everybody was congratulating me, All of a sudden the pressure
was off. And sure it’ll probably come back the next time I show I guess the big
point here is if you don’t win the 1st time or the 2nd ,and so on, just keep on trying
and I promise you IF you keep on trying you’ll win some day. One more thing my
big goal in handling is winning best in show some day.
And that’s my story so far.

Saturday, November 6 and Sunday, November 7, 2010

Judges:     Ron Horn, CO

It was 4:30 AM and I couldn’t sleep. Thoughts raced through my head as I rehearsed the day ahead. It was the beginning of a 4 day show weekend with the possibility of finishing Leader. The van had been loaded the night before with all the necessary equipment. Still awake, it was then 5AM and I decided to greet the day. Surrounded by my 10 newfs and still dark, I carefully stepped over the big, black obstacles that stretched across the floor. One by one I called to them to turn them out and ready them for their day at home.  The morning air was brisk which was reflected in their heightened morning energy. After settling them for the day, I dressed and Leader and I made our way to the Van. Fog had been predicted, but visibility was clear. We made the 45 minute journey to the show grounds. As we entered the gate and got out parking permit for the weekend, the energy of anticipation was in the air. Other exhibiters had camped at the show grounds while others had stayed in nearby hotels. Some, like us, commuted. Gradually, the exhibiters arrived and began the last minute preparation to show. Some of the dogs would be shown by professional handlers, some by owner/handlers, some by friends and family, and some, like me, were breeder/owner handlers. Leader and I made our way to the grooming area where Joan, Leader’s groomer and friend awaited. The command of “Paws up” and Leader was on the table for Joan to ready him for the ring. I rushed off to pick up my arm band and to watch the judge as she judged another breed. Handling does not come easily to me so I need to watch and see the patterns that the judge is using to evaluate each dog presented. I bought a catalog on the way back to the grooming area and confirmed the major in boys, all 4 days. Nervous, I paced as Joan finished combing out Leader. It was now time for Leader to come off the table. We made our way to the ring, stopping on the way there for Leader to go potty. We arrived at the ring and I immediately spotted my friend, Donna, Leader’s “personal photographer”. Fantastic, with Donna ring side, I knew there would be great pictures. The judge still had about 10 dogs to assess before she would begin with newfies. Time seemed to drag and waiting made me more and more anxious. I paced and paced wearing a path in the grass. Finally it was our time to go into the ring. On Leader’s individual, I was nervous and took him up and back on the diagonal, not what the judge asked me to do, so, I did not follow the requested pattern. After each was examined individually, we ran around the ring together. At that point the judge pointed to one of the other exhibiters. The judge had decided on her selection and it was NOT Leader. The major would not be his that day. I congratulated the winning exhibiters and left the ring. Tomorrow would be another day and a different judge who might see things differently.  Disappointed that the judge had liked other dogs better, my thoughts reviewed my performance as a handler and I began to focus on what I could do better to present Leader the next day. After visiting with friends and watching the groups, I loaded Leader up and headed for home, hopeful that the following day the points would go to Leader. Leader already had one major so he needed his second. That was my goal for the weekend to get at least one major. The next morning came early. When the alarm clock went off, I was still sleeping. Although the air was brisk and I was excited about the possibility of being Winner’s Dog, there was no spring my step. The process of the day before was repeated and soon Leader and I were on our way to the show ground. Once again, Joan expertly groomed Leader and although as nervous as always, ring time arrived. Soon we were called into the ring for Bred By. I was filled with anticipation and hope for a major. Today felt different. Leader and I were working as a team. Then the judge made his decision. He pointed to Leader and he was first in his class. Breathless from the exercise and excitement of the win, we left the ring to recover and ready ourselves to return to the ring for Winner’s Dog. After the other classes in dogs were completed, Leader and I were called back into the ring. Today, the judge liked Leader and awarded him Winner’s Dog. WOW, Leader had done what I had hoped, he had achieved the goal and picked up his 2nd major. Hooray, hooray! Way to go Leader! After the judge had reviewed the various bitch classes and had chosen Winner’s Bitch, it was time for Leader to go back into the ring for Best of Breed competition. Still out of breath from Leader being selected Winner’s Dog, Leader and I entered the ring again. The judge examined the dogs once again and had us go around the ring together. To my greatest surprise, the judge put Leader up Best of Breed. Unbelievable, we were about to make our debut in Group!  I was soo excited! Leader was going to Group! When I checked the catalog, I discovered that the judge that had left us back in the Bred by class the day before was our group judge. I decided to go to group anyway just for the experience and to show off the dog that I think is soo handsome!! What a thrill group turned out to be!! Leader did wonderfully on his individual. After the judge had finished with all the individual examinations, each handler started to stack their dog for the finale. The judge started down the line. The suspense was mounting. Which dogs would make the cut? I knew one thing for certain. The day before, she did not like Leader well enough to even win his class, I knew he was NOT going to make the cut. There I was looking down at Leader and restacking him when I heard the words, “May I have the newfy please?” As I heard the words, all I could think was” oh no, am I getting tossed out of the ring for something?” Was the judge about to excuse us? I looked up and saw her pointing for Leader and I to join the other dogs she had chosen for the cut. WOW, what exhilaration and excitement I felt as we made our way across the ring! To me, being pulled out among those she would ultimately choose as the 4 best Working Dogs in the show was an experience I will never forget! To me this honor was akin to winning a Best in Show. There is no greater thrill for a breeder/owner handler!. What a day at the show…It means a lot to have others see Leader as I do, a beautiful example of what a Newfoundland should be.  Now, it was time to load up and return home to get some rest before returning for another day at the show!
The next 2 days would leave Leader with Reserve each day. This weekend demonstrates the highs and lows of dog showing. One day Leader was left in the classes, the next he got a major and a cut in the working group and the remaining 2 days, he went Reserve. The same dog with the same wonderful characteristics is seen differently in the context of the breed standard by each judge. Regardless, I am the lucky one because each day, I am the one that gets to go home with Leader and experience his unconditional love. What a great show weekend….2 points left to his championship…WAY TO GO LEADER!, Sandy Cove’s Love Leads the Way

                  "Hemingway"
My grandson Tyler was used for the distraction and Hemingway had no problem continuing his work.  It is wonderful to share this journey with my grandson.
Our quest for Hemingways Draft title continues.             As I always say "It's the journey that keeps us going"
Double commands are a "No No" in the obedience part of the draft test.  Hemingway forgot to remind me of that before the test began.  Thus we live to test again.
